Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants are a great choice when it comes to replacing missing teeth because of their many benefits:

  • Implants protect the health of your gums and jaw by preventing tissue resorption, which is a common issue after tooth loss.
  • With proper care, implants can last a lifetime.
  • Implants feel and look more natural than other restorations because they are anchored to your gum and jaw just like a real tooth.

Understanding The Implant Process

After Dr. Willis has approved you for an implant and developed a treatment plan, he will refer you to an oral surgeon to place the post of the dental implant. During your implant placement appointment, your mouth will be cleaned and numbed, and a small incision will be made in the gum tissue and jaw bone. Then, the implant will be inserted. The area is then cleaned and sutured shut, and your recovery process begins. Throughout the next 3-6 months, your implant will undergo the process of “osseointegration” as it heals. This means that the implant will become permanently bonded to your jaw bone and act as an artificial tooth root.

For your restoration appointment, Dr. Willis will create a custom dental crown (false tooth) that will be permanently affixed onto your healed implant to restore your tooth. Before attaching the crown, Dr. Willis will check to ensure that it matches your surrounding teeth perfectly. Then, it will be bonded into place permanently with dental cement, completing the procedure and giving you a brand new, restored tooth.

Are Dental Implants Right for Me?

If you are missing one or more teeth, and your mouth is healthy and free from issues like gum disease and tooth decay, dental implants may be the right restorative option for you. A good candidate will have adequate, healthy jaw bone to support a dental implant. If your jaw has been weakened due to bone resorption, you may require a bone graft or sinus lift to strengthen the underlying bone before a dental implant can be placed.
